What does Title IX have to do with sexual assault?

Many college students are returning for another year of schooling. After a long break from class, many students may need a refresher on their student code of conduct, specifically Title IX rules. College rules and policies are constantly changing and there may be new regulations to watch out for. Here’s what you should know:

Every student must follow Title IX policies

Students are required to read and follow any policies provided by their educational institution. One of the many policies students will agree to is Title IX – Title IX prohibits gender discrimination in educational fields in hopes of enforcing sexual conduct. The intended effect is to reduce sexual violence and harassment claims. It is typically believed that Title IX only protects women, however, Title IX makes college campuses discrimination free to any form of sexual orientation and gender identity. In other words, men, women and anyone in the LGBT+ community are protected from violence because of who they are.

Many students break policies without knowing

Just because policies are in place to protect students, doesn’t mean everyone knows the rules and limitations. The law is constantly changing and so may Title IX policies. Many schools take sexual harassment and discrimination seriously. Violating a school policy can have grave effects on a student's record. Depending on how a school enforces its code of conduct, a student may lose their student loans and grants or be expelled for their actions. Many situations happen because of some misunderstanding. If you’re a student accused of violating Title IX rules and any kind of sexual offense, reaching out for legal help is wise.
